Giacomo Gusmano was born to a wealthy family in Palermo , Sicily . Drawn to service, he initially studied medicine, receiving his degree at 21 But in time he felt called to the priesthood Ordained in 1860 A.D., Cusmano 's ministry was dedicated to the poor & marginalized

This was the inspiration for a program called "Morsel of the Poor," which collected food, clothing, & other necessities for those without. To assist him in this work he formed a band of auxiliaries, Brothers of the Servants of the Poor, & in time an order of priests, the Congregation of Missionary Fathers, devoted to serving the poor.

Fr. Cusmano died on March 14, 1888 A.D., while treating the victims of a cholera epidemic

At his beatification in 1983 A.D., Pope John Paul II said of him: "To heal the wounds of poverty & misery...he chose the way of charity;

love for God :jesus:

which was translated into effective love for his brethren & into the gift of himself to the most needy & suffering in a service pushed to the point of heroic sacrifice."
