Saints Who Transformed the Culture
A native of Pisa , Italy , Agnellus was received into the Franciscans by their holy founder, Saint Francis himself. Francis sent Agnellus to introduce the order to France . Agneullus founded the order's house at the University of Paris , thus cementing the Franciscans' relation with what was then the finest educational institution in Europe

In 1224, Francis sent Agnellus to bring the Franciscan Order to England . Landing at Dover with 8 others, Agnellus established houses in London 
& Oxford . When he set up the school for theology at Oxford, he hired the august scholar Robert Grosseteste as lecturer

In time Agnellus 's school was associated with a number of outstanding figures, including Roger Bacon , William of Ockham , & Blessed John Duns Scotus . Agnellus also became involved in politics, serving as a peace envoy 
between King Henry III

Despite these somewhat worldly associations, Agnellus embraced Lady Poverty. When he added an infirmary to the Oxford friary 
he made the ceilings so low that a man could barely stand in them, & he never acquired more land for any house than was strictly necessary. In the 3 days leading up to his death in 1236 A.D., Agneulls was in great pain. "Come, sweet Jesus " 
was his constant plea.
