Blessed Giacomo Cusmano
Servant of the Poor (

Giacomo Gusmano was born to a wealthy family in Palermo , Sicily . Drawn to service, he initially studied medicine, receiving his degree at 21 
But in time he felt called to the priesthood 
Ordained in 1860 A.D., Cusmano 's ministry was dedicated to the poor & marginalized

Cusmano founded a House of the Poor to provide services to those in need-medical care, as well as food 🍞 & clothing 👖 Visiting a family one day, he was impressed that they set aside a plate from their meal to provide for the poor 🍝 If half the people of Palermo followed this practice, he reasoned, it would address much of the city's hunger.

This was the inspiration for a program called "Morsel of the Poor," which collected food, clothing, & other necessities for those without. To assist him in this work he formed a band of auxiliaries, Brothers of the Servants of the Poor, & in time an order of priests, the Congregation of Missionary Fathers, devoted to serving the poor.

At his beatification in 1983 A.D., Pope John Paul II said of him: "To heal the wounds of poverty & misery...he chose the way of charity; 
love for God 
which was translated into effective love for his brethren & into the gift of himself to the most needy & suffering in a service pushed to the point of heroic sacrifice."#Catholic
