"Charity never says, 'It is enough.'" Johannes Hofbauer (Jan Dvorak in Czech ) was born in Moravia . The 9th of 12 children, he wanted to be a priest, but faced financial hardship. Several times he tried a hermit's life instead, during which he changed his name to Clement Mary, but realized this was not his call.

. Hofbauer , who loved pilgrimages, set off to Rome 
where he was inspired to join the Redemptorists . He made his profession on the feast of Saint Joseph & was ordained a priest 10 days later.
