Anthony was born to a working-class Catalonian family. He heard a call to the priesthood at a young age, but his family needed his help in their textile shop 🪡 🧵 . Sent at seventeen to learn advanced weaving techniques in Barcelona, he became by his own account "obsessed" with the business 🧮 side of the textile trade and lost his fervor for the faith. After he survived a near-fatal accident by calling on the Blessed Virgin, he entered the seminary ⛪ 👨‍🏫 and began a lifelong ascetic regimen.
