Saints Who Display Gifts of the Holy Spirit 🕊️

Pulcheria was the daughter of Emperor Flavius Arcadius 🤴 , who ruled the eastern half of the Roman Empire. A rule more in name than in fact, Pulcheria's father was pushed around by battling advisers and his own wife, Eudoxia. He thus became embroiled in a conflict with Saint John Chrysostom, who criticized Eudoxia for her vanity and greed 💰 . Chrysostom was exiled and eventually died of harsh treatment.

By contrast, Pulcheria is remembered as a devout and modest girl, who committed herself to virginity at the age of fifteen. She also proved to be an excellent leader. When her father died, the senate named Pulcheria regent for her younger brother. She taught young Theodosius to care for his people, and continued to guide him even after he came of age. She had the relics of John Chrysostom brought back with honor, and she and her brother offered penance for their parents' sin.

When her brother died in a riding accident, Pulcheria became empress 👸 . To assist her in governing, she selected Marcian, a brave general and Roman senator, to be emperor alongside her. They agreed to a continent marriage 👰 💒 🤵‍♂️ and ruled well together. Pulcheria died at fifty-four in the year 453.
