🇪🇬 🇻🇦 Saint Paphnutius of Egypt Feast: 11 September

🇪🇬 🇻🇦 Saint Paphnutius of Egypt

Bishop ( ✝️  4th Century Anno Domini A.D.)      Feast: 11 September

Saints Who Faced Persecution

Inspired by the example of Saint Anthony the Great, Paphnutius left the world behind to live in the desert 🌵 . He lived under Anthony's direction for several years and was later made a bishop in Egypt ♗.

But in 311 A.D., the Roman emperor Maximinus Daza began a persecution of Catholics, 🤕 💪 and Paphnutius was arrested ⛓️ . Like others who refused to renounce their faith in Christ, Paphnutius was punished by having his right eye removed 👁️  and by being hamstrung in one leg 🦵 🗡️ 🩼 ; then he was sent to work in the mines ⛏️ . Unlike many others, Paphnutius survived. After the persecution of the Church ended, Paphnutius returned to serve as bishop of his flock ⛪ .

Paphnutius became an outspoken opponent of the Arian heresy. In 335 A.D., he attended the Council of Tyre, only to discover that the Catholic bishops were outnumbered by those who supported Arianism. Paphnutius noticed that one of the Arian bishops was Maximus of Jerusalem 🇮🇱 , who had been mutilated in the same persecution as Paphnutius. He privately told Maximus that he could not bear that someone who bore the same marks as himself should side with those who misunderstood the truth about Jesus Christ. Maximus was moved by Paphnutius' words, returned to the side of orthodoxy, and never left it again.

🙏 Jesus, our Good Shepherd, give us the words to bring back those Christians who have strayed from the faith 🛐
