Saints Who Worked Together
John's father died when he was little. Raised by his hardworking mother, he was drawn to fasting & prayer 🙏 He so distinguished himself as a preacher & teacher 👨🏫 in Antioch that he later earned the surname Chrysostom, or "golden-mouthed." In 398, he was made Patriarch of the capital city of Constantinople, 800 miles from his home.

From the time of his arrival in his new see, John spent himself in efforts for the poor, the sick 🤒 & the homeless. In this work, he drew help from the women of the city, especially Olympias . A woman of great means 💰 Olympias had been widowed not long after her marriage & showed constant concern for the poor. She was a benefactor to Gregory of Nazianzus ' Church of the Resurrection in the capital ⛪& Gregory of Nyssa dedicated his "Commentary on the Song of Songs" to her. She lived in a convent with other women & observed an austere regimen. John came to depend on her above all the others.

John was exiled twice by the Emperor Arcadius , whose wife Eudoxia resented John's frequent condemnations of her scandalous lifestyle. Olympias remained John's staunchest supporter in Constantinople & defended herself against spurious charges & frequent attacks from John's enemies. At last, she too was expelled from the city. 🚶♂️ 💨 🚶♀️ 💨 👈 🤴 👸

We have 17 letters John wrote to Olympias before he died of his ill-treatment, messages of consolation from one suffering friend to another. He consoled her: "My lady most beloved by God, do not give yourself over to the tyranny of despair." 🙅♂️ 😩
