πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ πŸ‡»πŸ‡¦ Blessed Daudi Okelo Feast: 18 September

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ πŸ‡»πŸ‡¦  Blessed Daudi Okelo

Martyr ( ✝️  1918 Anno Domini A.D.)     Feast: 18 September

Saints Who Faced Persecution

Daudi was born in Uganda. His parents were pagans, but they allowed him to be educated by a Catholic missionary priest in their village πŸ‘¨πŸΏ‍πŸŽ“  πŸ‘¨‍🏫 ⛪ . Daudi requested baptism when he was fourteen years old, and soon afterward he asked to become a catechist. Several months later, the lead catechist in the area died, and teenaged Daudi requested to take his place. The missionary priest explained to him that he would have to travel long distances πŸ“ 🚢🏿‍♂️ , deal with tribal infighting πŸ’ͺ🏿 , and be aware of dangers from bandits and slave traders 🏴‍☠️ . Daudi merely responded, "I am not afraid to die. Jesus, too, died for us!"

Accompanied by an assistant, Daudi traveled to his assigned village, where he beat a drum πŸͺ˜ each morning to call his catechumens to join him in prayer πŸ™πŸΏ  , visited nearby villages to encourage Christians, and daily taught children about the faith. Daudi often helped the children memorize their prayers and the catechism by reciting them in a sing-song fashion πŸ—£️ 🎢 .

However, British πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ rule of Uganda caused intermittent tensions. Local troublemakers, including raiders, witch-doctors πŸ§™πŸΏ‍♂️  πŸ§™πŸΏ‍♀️ , and Muslims ☪️ , capitalized on these tensions to blame Christians. One morning, five of them entered Daudi 's village and demanded that he give up teaching the catechism. When he refused, they pulled him to the ground and killed him with spears.
