🇮🇪 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇻🇦   Saint Adomnán of Iona

Abbot ( ✝️ 704 Anno Domini A.D.)                Feast: 23 September

Saints Who Wrote Spiritual Classics 📝

Also known as Eunan, Adomnán was born in [Ireland] at the beginning of the 7th Century. He was educated by the monks of the abbey on the island of Iona ⛪ 👨‍🏫 , established by the Irish ☘️ monk Saint Columba.  Adomnán eventually became a monk himself and in 679 was chosen as abbot of the Iona monastery. This made him also the leader of several monasteries in Ireland.

Adomnán traveled to Ireland several times during his time as abbot, including for the Synod of Tara, where he was instrumental in establishing the "Law of Innocents," which protected women and children from being killed or captured during wars. The law also protected clerics and is known as the Canon of Adomnán.

Adomnán also wrote 📝 the "Life of Saint Columba", 📕 considered to be one of the most important and complete hagiographies ever composed. Working within the century following the great saint's death, he drew on the work of Columba's contemporaries and on poems written in his praise. In it he recounted Columba's miracles, prophecies, and visions. Its hagiographical focus on cultivating devotion sometimes makes it difficult to separate fact and legend. Nonetheless, Adomnán has been compared with the great Church historian Bede the Venerable for his careful and beautiful historical writing, and his work is considered a treasure trove of information about the early Scottish Church and society. Adomnán died in 704.
