Brendan lived in a bee-hive shaped cell & spent hours each day meditating on the Scriptures After further education at Cluainfois , Brendan was ordained & began to evangelize western Ireland; he is credited with founding a great many monasteries, including Annadown , Inishadroum , Ardfert , & the great foundation at Clonfert as well as others in Brittany & Scotland ๐ด๓ ง The medieval legend "Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis" ...
details the 7-year sea voyage that Brendan undertook after receiving a vision of the "Promised Land" of the saints. Although many scholars question the truth of the "Navigatio", in A.D. 1976 contemporary explorer Tim Severin made a case for its authenticity by reproducing Brendan's journey from Ireland to Newfoundland in a 36 foot hide-covered boat. Brendan is the patron saint of whales & seafarers
An old sailors' prayer asks that Brendan "help us remember that we have only one true port-heaven."
Eternal Father, through the intercession of Saint Brendan the Navigator, lead me forward by your gentle light
