St. John of Egypt
Hermit ( 394 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: March 27
St. John was one of the most famous of the early desert fathers, & his ascetic exploits were honored by many saints, including Augustine , Jerome , & John Cassian . He spent his early life as a carpenter before receiving a call to a life of prayer & solitude
John then apprenticed himself to an elderly monk who trained his capacity for obedience by forcing him to perform seemingly ridiculous exercises, like faithfully watering a dead twig or moving heavy rocks from place to place

Upon his master's death, John set out for the desert wilderness. From a cave he constructed a cell in which he walled himself in, except for a window through which he received donations of food. 🥣

John received visitors only on Saturdays & Sundays. The other days he spent in prayer Pilgrims flocked to see him, drawn by his renowned gifts of prophecy, healing & the ability to read people's souls. Even the emperor sent messengers to receive his wisdom
John spent over 40 years in this life. At the age of 90, when he sensed that his end was near, he closed his window & instructed that no one disturb him for 3 days. At the conclusion of that period he was found to have expired while kneeling in prayer.
"Am I a saint, or a prophet like God's true servants? I am a sinful & weak man....Live always in the fear of God , & never forget his benefits."
