When Roch was in Piacenza , he caught the plague himself He retired to a small hut ๐
in the woods
where he received miraculous helps, including the assistance of a friendly dog, who brought him bread
According to one account, upon his recovery Roch returned home to France , only to be arrested
by those who did not recognize him in his pilgrim guise. He languished in prison for 5 years before he died. Only afterward did his jailers realize who he was

An early recorded instance of veneration of Saint Roch was in 1414 in Constance , when the prayers & procession to honor him are said to have stopped a local epidemic in its tracks
Roch's intercession was so coveted that agents from Venice stole his relics in 1485 & brought them to the ailing citizens of the seaport city, where they were enshrined in the church
in which they may be venerated today.
