Saint Jeanne Delanoue
Foundress ( 1736 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 17 August
Saints Who Were Champions of the Poor
At the age of 25, Jeanne (or Joan ) inherited her parents' shop near the shrine of Notre Dame de Ardilliers in France
Although her parents had been generous folk, Jeanne was about maximizing profit

Jeanne stayed open on Sundays, refused food to beggars, & charged pilgrims a high price to stay in the caves behind the store. On the Eve of Epiphany , 1693 A.D., a poor, old pilgrim woman arrived at the shop. Although her babblings sounded crazy to others
they touched Jeanne's heart
When the woman returned a few months later, Jeanne gave her her best dress

& when the woman told Jeanne that Jesus
wanted her to go to help a poor family that was living in a stable
Jeanne obeyed. Before long, Jeanne was spending more time with the poor than at her shop. She welcomed them into her own home, which became known as "Providence House." In 1704 A.D. she & few other women began the Congregation of Saint Anne of Providence to continue the work with the poor. Jeanne became "Jeanne of the Cross "

Even as Jeanne gave more & more to the poor, she remained determined to do penance for her earlier selfishness. She patiently suffered severe toothaches
& earaches
for years. By the time of her death in 1736 A.D. Jeanne had founded 12 communities to care for the poor
