"What will become of you?" asked Raymond Kolbe's exasperated mother. Young Raymond took the words to heart & went to pray 
before the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary . In answer, the Virgin Mary appeared, offering him 2 crowns 
one for purity & one for martyrdom. He chose both.

At 13, Kolbe entered the Franciscans, taking the name Maximilian Mary. During World War II, he was imprisoned at Auschwitz & died offering his life in place of a fellow prisoner. Father Maximilian's heroic death was enough to confirm his sanctity. But it was preceded by a life of astounding work, fueled by joyous love for the Immaculate Virgin.

While still a seminarian, Kolbe founded a group, the Militia Immaculata , dedicated to promoting the practice of total consecration to Mary. Their broader mission: to use all possible means to spread the kingdom of the Sacred Heart 
With this goal in mind, he would establish a huge media center cum friary 
in Poland, known as Niepokalanow , or the City of the Immaculata.
