Michael was born in 1852 in Waterbury , Connecticut , the eldest of 13 children of Irish immigrants. He finished public school at 13 & worked for 3 years in a brass factory  to help provide for his family's needs before entering the seminary  After ordination, he was assigned to Saint Mary 's in New Haven

Anti- Catholic sentiment ran high at the time, & Michael 's parishioners, Irish immigrants  often took the lowest & most dangerous jobs. The sudden death of a family's breadwinner was not uncommon, & the lack of a social safety net meant that the family would be suddenly plunged into poverty. Seeking to provide support, Michael drew men together into a fraternal order to provide for widows & orphans.

McGivney founded the organization on the 2 pillars of charity & unity, & he explicitly proposed the organization as an alternative to secret society that led men away from the Church  When the 1st members moved to elect him head, Michael demurred, insisting that the leader should be a layman. After nearly 13 years of unstinting service to his parishioners, Michael died of pneumonia at the age of 38.
