Jean-Marie Vianney , the great Cure of Ars , began life as a farm boy in France . During the French Revolution , his generous family sheltered priests, as well as other needy souls, including the future Saint Benedict Joseph Labre .

Filled with love for God 
, Jean-Marie managed to be ordained a priest despite a multitude of setbacks, including excruciating difficulty in study & a military draft by Napoleon . At first he was assigned to assist his beloved pastor, Father Balley , whose example & assistance had been an inspiration. When Father Balley died, the parishioners were eager to have Jean-Marie assume his place. However, he refused, feeling himself unworthy of the post.

Instead Vianney was sent to the small village of Ars, where ignorance & apathy abounded. Here, although he worked wonders of conversion, he experienced discouragement & attacks on his reputation. 
"I thought a time would come when people would rout me out of Ars with sticks, when the bishop would suspend me, & I should end my days in prison 
."

Nonetheless Vianney labored on, finding strength to combat despair & temptation thru constant recourse to Jesus in the Eucharist 
He told his people, "Nothing but crosses will reassure us at the Day of Judgment. When that day shall come, we shall be happy in our misfortunes, proud of our humiliations, and rich in our sacrifices."
