Most Americans support the idea of reducing US dependence on foreign oil. Republicans supported not only drill, baby, drill, but diversifying into established technology (nuclear, wind, solar) as well as investing in research for advanced renewable with the objective of increasing US national security. Democrats just seem to support shutting down coal plants & letting the elderly freeze to death with the objective of currying favor at the UN.
Uncle Jay points out the law of unintended consequences. Current oil exporters are not happy with proposed alternatives to petroleum, either for purported religious reasons, or, more than likely, Realpolitik & Machiavellian reasons.
