Saints Who Were Devoted to Saint Joseph
Pedro de Betancur was a native of the Canary Islands In his 20s, he felt a call to serve the poor in Latin America . He left his home to travel to Guatemala , pausing for about a year in Cuba because his money ran out, then working his way on to Guatemala
In Guatemala , Pedro joined the seminary but left when it became apparent that the studies were too difficult for him. He became a Franciscan tertiary, taking the name Pedro de San José . For the next 12 years he labored diligently among the poor in Guatemala . With a special devotion to the Nativity, he strove to find the face of the infant Jesus in those whom he served.
Hermano Pedro , as he was known, cared for the sick, prisoners, & the homeless, & used a little hut he was given to establish a hospital dedicated to Our Lady of Bethlehem (whose Immaculate Conception he defended, well before its definition as a dogma).

Pedro established the Bethlehemite Brothers, who helped to staff the hospital. He also catechized children using songs & plays It is also said he began the tradition of the Posadas , commemorating Saint Joseph 's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem . Peter died at the age of 41. He was canonized in 2002 A.D.
