🇪🇸 🇬🇹 🇻🇦 Saint Pedro de San José Betancur
Founder (✝️ 1667 Anno Domini A.D. ) Feast: 25 April
Saints Who Were Devoted to Saint Joseph

Pedro de Betancur was a native of the Canary Islands 🇮🇨 In his 20s, he felt a call to serve the poor in Latin America . He left his home to travel to Guatemala , pausing for about a year in Cuba 🇨🇺 because his money ran out, then working his way on to Guatemala

In Guatemala , Pedro joined the seminary 🏫 ⛪ but left when it became apparent that the studies were too difficult for him. He became a Franciscan tertiary, taking the name Pedro de San José . For the next 12 years he labored diligently among the poor in Guatemala . With a special devotion to the Nativity, he strove to find the face of the infant Jesus in those whom he served.

Hermano Pedro , as he was known, cared for the sick, prisoners, & the homeless, & used a little hut he was given to establish a hospital dedicated to Our Lady of Bethlehem (whose Immaculate Conception he defended, well before its definition as a dogma). 👨‍⚕️ 🏥

Pedro established the Bethlehemite Brothers, who helped to staff the hospital. He also catechized children 👨‍🏫 using songs & plays 🎼 🎶 🎭 It is also said he began the tradition of the Posadas , commemorating Saint Joseph 's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem . Peter died at the age of 41. He was canonized in 2002 A.D.
