Servant of God Stefania Lacka, a journalist ๐ฐ and teacher ๐ฉ๐ซ known as "the earthly guardian angel ๐ผ of Auschwitz," baptized children in the Nazi death camps, saved many from the crematorium, and shored up morale among her fellow prisoners with unswerving kindness and faith.

On April 16, 1941, the Nazis arrested ⛓️ Lacka and several of her associates. Under torture in prison, she refused to reveal the names of colleagues who had not been detained. She was transferred along with sixty other women on April 27, 1942, to Auschwitz and soon fell ill with typhus ๐ค . After recovering she was assigned, partly due to her fluency in German , to the camp infirmary ⚕️ ๐ฉ⚕️ ๐ฅ .

There, Lacka's access to inmate files allowed her to surreptitiously remove a number of names from the crematorium lists. She was able to write to the families of others ๐ ✉️. And for the infants she couldn't save, before they were killed along with their mothers she baptized as many as she could, in secret and under penalty of death. But perhaps Lacka's greatest gift was the spirit of fortitude and faith with which she encouraged everyone around her to hold fast, to be kind, and to pray๐.

At the conclusion of the war, Lacka was liberated from the death camp and left with five companions on January 23, 1945. She returned to her family home, attended daily Mass ⛪ ๐ท ๐ซ , and attempted to re-integrate into normal life. Determined to continue her studies, she enrolled in the Jagiellonian University in Krakow with the intention of studying Polish philology. Weakened however by malnutrition, physical abuse, and the emotional trauma from her years in the camps, she died of tuberculosis ๐ฆ on November 7, 1946, at the age of thirty-two.

Her cause for canonization was opened in August 2021. "Stefania Lacka was distinguished for her high degree of the virtues of faith, hope, and love, and the moral virtues," wrote Bishop Andrzej Jez of Tarnow. "From the day of her funeral until now, her private cult has been growing."

Lacka has been commemorated in Poland by poetry and documentary film ๐ฌ . At the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Pasierbiec, a village outside Krakow, in 2010 the parishioners dedicated an outdoor Stations of the Cross ✝️ with figures from recent Polish Catholic history. At the Eighth Station, where Jesus traditionally speaks to the women of Jerusalem, he now meets Stanislawa Leszczynska, a Polish midwife who delivered over three thousand babies ๐ถ at Auschwitz - and Servant of God Stefania Lacka.

A prayer for private recitation:
Almighty and eternal God, grant me the spirit of faith, hope, and love with which You filled the Servant of God Stefania ลฤ cka, and grant, through her intercession, that by living according to Your commandments and the Gospel, I may become increasingly like Christ. Through her participation in the Savior's Passion, grant me the grace for which I humbly and trustingly pray...
God, source of holiness, grant that the Servant of God Stefania may be numbered among the blessed. ๐
