Priest ( ✝️ 1890 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 9 October
In his own words, Newman gave up "much that he loved and prized and could have retained, but he loved honesty more than name, and Truth better than dear friends." Born in London in 1801, John Henry Newman was without religious convictions until age fifteen, when he became convinced of some dogmas of Christianity. He was elected a fellow of Oxford's prestigious Oriel College 👨🎓 🏫 in his twenties. He saw his work as pastoral, and sought ordination as a Protestant minister.
A leading light of the Oxford Movement, which sought to restore certain elements of Catholic teaching and practice, Newman was eager to renew the Church of England. He helped restore attention to the Fathers, the sacraments, and liturgy. But he himself was not content with his "via media" -middle way- between Rome and the Reformation. In his mid-forties, he became a Catholic, was ordained a priest, and joined the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri.

Many Protestants felt Newman had acted in bad faith, and at one point he was charged with having argued that Catholic clergy could rightly lie 🤞 in service of their Church ⛪ . He also suffered misunderstanding from fellow Catholics. Newman eventually penned his autobiographical 📚 "Apologia pro Vita Sua", successfully defending himself against the various charges in a work that remains a classic of Catholic literature. His oeuvre is voluminous and includes also the famous "Idea of a University" and "An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine". Newman was made a cardinal in 1879, and died eleven years later. He was canonized in 2019.
