๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ฆ Holy Simeon Feast: 8 October

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ฆ Holy Simeon
God Receiver ( ✝️ First Century Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 8 October

Simeon makes a brief but significant appearance in the Gospel of Luke, where he is described as a "righteous and devout" man. living in Jerusalem, who had been "looking for the consolation of Israel." It had been revealed to Simeon by the Holy Spirit ๐Ÿ•Š️ "that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ." And so it happened one day when he was inspired to visit the temple ๐Ÿ• .

On that very day, Mary and Joseph, following the religious law, arrived in Jerusalem to perform the ritual presentation of their newborn son in the temple. When Simeon saw the infant Jesus, "he took him up in his arms and blessed God" and then uttered the words of the canticle now recited as the "Nunc Dimittis" at the Church's ⛪ office of Compline:

"Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, I according to thy word; / for mine eyes have seen thy salvation / which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, / a light for the revelation to the Gentiles / and for glory to thy people Israel."

This event is commemorated in February 2 under a number of names, including Candlemas ๐Ÿ•ฏ️ , or the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. But the Church celebrates the feast of Holy Simeon on October 8. Nothing else is recorded of the life of Simeon. Along with the aged prophetess Anna, who also recognized Jesus in the temple that day, he represents the faithful longing of Israel for the Messiah. He lived only for that purpose, and having seen the fulfillment of his hopes, he was happy to depart in peace.
