John was born in 1599 into an English family that had kept the faith through long years of persecution. He studied at Douai College (present-day France 🇫🇷 ) and returned to his homeland, where he covertly 🤫 served Catholics around the area of Hereford 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 for over fifty years.

John was one of the priests who was swept up in the hysteria surrounding Titus Oates' claims of a supposed Catholic plot to unalive King Charles II. When 88 year old John was warned in advance of his impending arrest, he refused to leave his post, declaring, "According to the course of nature I have but a few years to live. It will be an advantage to suffer for my religion and therefore I will not abscond."

Kemble was soon arrested ⛓️ and convicted of being a Catholic priest ⛪ ⚖️ Shortly before he was hanged, John declared to the gathered crowd that he was being executed for nothing other than professing the Catholic faith 🗣️ He then encouraged the hangman: "Honest Anthony, be not afraid; do thy office. I forgive thee with all my heart 💗 Thou wilt do me a greater kindness than discourtesy." In Welsh Newton, Herefordshire, the faithful still make a yearly pilgrimage to John's grave 🪦 💐
