Saints Who Battled the Devil 🥊 👿

"She is to be feared by all hell" (Declaration of Beatification for Blessed Bronislava). Bronislava, whose name means "protecting glory," was born in 1203 or 1204 in Poland. She belonged to an influential family, and was a cousin of Saint Hyacinth, one of the first Dominicans. Around the age of sixteen she joined the Norbertine convent ⛪ near Krakow, which had been founded by her grandfather. The life was very austere, with dirt floors in the cells, and no stoves to offer heat 🥶 🚫 🔥

Bronislava was elected prioress 🗳️ , and guided her community through turbulent times of civil war and enemy invasion. In 1241 they were besieged by the fearsome Tartars ⚔️ ☪️ , with no apparent escape. Bronislava took up a crucifix ✝️ , saying, "Do not fear anything - the cross will save us." They eluded capture by hiding in a passage, but the buildings were set ablaze 🔥 🏚️ and the nuns were trapped underground. Bronislava knocked three times on the rock with the crucifix and a safe escape appeared. Later she returned to rebuild 👷‍♀️ ⚒️ , and minister to the many victims of the attack 👩‍⚕️ . She died in 1259 and was buried in her convent 🪦 .

Three hundred years later, Bronislava's relics were used, and her name spontaneously invoked, during an exorcism. It is said that when her name was mentioned, the devil immediately left the victim. 🤕 👉 👿
