Philip received formation from the Dominicans & was a friend of Saint Ignatius . The order he founded, the Oratorians , shared with the Dominicans & the Jesuits a practical focus on bringing about renewal in the Church Philip was gifted at combining recreation & spiritual exercises, providing a wholesome alternative to the excesses of Roman society.
Neri established a walking trip to 7 principal churches in Rome which included breaks for refreshment & concluded with an "outdoor oratory"complete with singers, organ& other instruments. A group started gathering at Philip 's living quarters for spiritual reading & discussion sermons, & spiritual singing. They eventually expanded to larger halls, called oratories, & welcomed thousands, with famous musicians of the day reportedly playing for free
And it is in these oratories that the great oratorios of Bach and Handel have their origin. To this day, the Oratorians continue to use beautiful music to draw souls to prayer
Heavenly Father, send your Holy Spirit to live in us that we may be encouraged with the comfort of God
