🇬🇧 🇻🇦 Saint Nicholas Owen Feast: March 22

🇬🇧 🇻🇦 Saint Nicholas Owen
Martyr (✝️ 1606 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: March 22
Saints Who Worked with Their Hands

The son of an Oxford carpenter 🪚 🪓 Nicholas joined his father in the trade & then became a servant to Jesuit priests who were secretly 🤫 ministering to English Catholics in Tudor England . When Saint Edmund Campion was accused of treason, Nicholas came to his defense, a move that earned him a prison stay ⛓️

In 1597 A.D., Nicholas took vows as a lay brother &, for almost 20 years, he traveled from place to place with Father Henry Garnet . While Father Garnet was ministering discreetly to the faithful, Nicholas was working by night in their houses, creating custom hiding places for priests 🪚 A small man with a limp, Nicholas somehow moved boulders & demolished walls entirely on his own.

Nicholas finished his "priest-holes" in such clever fashion that authorities sometimes combed a house for days & still could not find his secret chambers 🕵️ In 1606 A.D., during an intense manhunt, Nicholas was forced to take refuge in one of his holes 🕳️ After a week, he gave himself up, hoping to distract the authorities from the 3 other Jesuits who were hiding in the same house, but to no avail; all were captured.

Since Nicholas held the information the authorities considered most dear-the locations of other hidden chambers 🗺️ 📍🧭 he was mercilessly racked for days. He refused to divulge anything about his work, calling out only "Jesus" :jesus:  & "Mary" He died as a result of his injuries 🤕
