Saint Nicholas of Flue
Hermit ( 1487 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast Day: March 21
Saints Who Had Families
Known as the father of Switzerland , Nicholas was a Swiss peasant of the 15th century. He spent many years as a soldier & also worked as a farmer A man of deep prayer he was about 50 when he received an unmistakable call to offer his life totally to God

Nicholas , however, was married & the father of 10 children It was a blow to both him & his wife, from whom he requested that he be free to live a contemplative life, telling her, "the Lord is leading me where I do not wish to go." Despite the great initial suffering, his wife determined in prayer that she should allow him to go. She was made the legal head of the family, & Nicholas became a hermit.

But the loss was not so total as it seemed at first. For Brother Klaus , as he became known, was led by God only to a nearby town-though he had intended to go farther-where his wife & children could see him frequently, & even attend Mass with him each Sunday

Nicholas , who in the last years of his life consumed only the Eucharist became a shining light of holiness for Switzerland , helping to negotiate a treaty which paved the way for the peaceful Switzerland of modern times He died at 70, surrounded by his family.
Heavenly Father, help us, like Brother Klaus , to trust your promise that those who live you will receive a hundredfold in return
