Servant of God Nicholas Black Elk
Holy Man (December 1, 1863 – August 19, 1950)
Black Elk, an Oglala of the Lakota Sioux , was born in 1863 A.D. on the Little Powder River in present-day Wyoming & grew up in a world on the verge of destruction. At the age of 9 he experienced a life-altering vision in which he traveled to the center of the universe & heard a call to save his people

Black Elk came from a long line of powerful medicine men. In 1881 he accepted his own initiation in this mission. In 1890 he survived the massacre at Wounded Knee , where over 300 mean, women, & children died, their trust in the mystical Ghost Dance having failed to protect them from army bullets. Years later he said, "I did not know then how much was ended…A people's dream died there…It was a beautiful dream…the nation's hoop is broken & scattered."

"There is no center any longer, & the sacred tree is dead." In 1892 Black Elk married a Christian woman
& their 3 children were baptized. In 1904, after his wife's death, Black Elk himself became a Catholic
, taking the name Nicholas. Eventually he became a catechist & traveled widely, spreading the Catholic faith. Opinions differ on the meaning of his story & how Black Elk reconciled the different halves of his spiritual history.

Apparently, Black Elk found a way to integrate his Christian faith with the great vision of his youth. At 67, he finally described that vision to a white author in the classic "Black Elk Speaks." He died on the reservation on August 19, 1950. In 2017 the Vatican authorized his cause for canonization, and he was named Servant of God.
"Sometimes dreams are wiser than waking."

Heavenly Father, Great Spirit! Behold us, who stand before you singing our song of thanksgiving for #ServantOfGodNicholasBlackElk. Faithfully he walked the Sacred Red Road & generously witnessed the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ
among the Native American people. We humbly ask you to hear the prayers we plead through his intercession. We ask Holy Mother Church to recognize his sanctity by acknowledging his presence among the company of Saints and as one to imitate in his zeal for the Gospel. Open our hearts
to also recognize the Risen Christ in other cultures and peoples, to your glory & honor, through Christ our Lord.
Amen
