In 1790 a decree of the revolutionary French Republic suppressed all religious communities   , save those engaged in teaching  & nursing  One of the affected communities was a convent of Carmelite nuns in Compiègne

The nuns were forced to relinquish their habits, to dress in secular clothes & to abandon their convents. Nevertheless, in July 1794 sixteen nuns were arrested on the charge of continuing their illicit way of life & imprisoned in a former Visitation convent Two weeks later they were transported to Paris . By this time, judging that the moment for compromise had passed, they resumed their religious habits & openly recited the prayers of the Divine Office

The nuns trial was brief   They were convicted of having made themselves "enemies of the people by conspiring against its sovereign rule." On July 17, 1794, they were transported by open wagons to the place of execution 🪓 all the while singing   the "Salve Regina" & "Veni Creator Spiritus" - the hymn sung for the profession of vows-& reciting the prayers for the dying

The nuns were beheaded in turn, beginning with the novice, Sr. Constance , & ending with the prioress, Mother Teresa of St. Augustine . A witness said they looked as though they were going to their wedding. These Carmelits were beatified in 1906. Their story inspired a moving opera  by Francois Poulenc , "Dialogues of the Carmelites", for which Georges Bernanos provided the libretto.

Wharton: Every window-pane is smashed, nearly every building unroofed, and some house-fronts are sliced clean off, with the different stories exposed, as if for the stage-setting of a farce....



Wharton: with a little church so stripped and wounded and dishonoured that it lies there by the roadside like a human victim.




Narrator: In the Spring of 1915, one of America's most famous novelists embarked on a tour of the Western Front. Edith Wharton had come on her own initiative to deliver medical supplies, take photographs, and write letters and articles for publication back home about what she called 'the dreadful realities of war.' 




Narrator: For seven months, Wharton followed the track of the German invasion describing 'the huge tiger scratches that the German beast flung over the land.' She stopped to visit French troops who wrote <>in chalk on her car and got close enough to the front lines to peer out at a dead German soldier sprawled across No-Man's-Land.

Narrator: 'I had the sense of an all pervading, invisible power of evil,' she remembered.   'A saturation of the whole landscape with some hidden vitriol of hate.' 

Dude: Edith Wharton, she's symbolic of a lot of Americans who were living in France, already had a deep passionate interest in France, a deep love of France.  They'll able to make clear exactly what's happening.  And the important thing about this is it's coming from an American voice.  

Narrator: At the outset of the war, Wharton had organized a series of  American hostels to shelter the wave of dislocated families pouring into Paris.  In little more than a year, her relief had provided clothing and jobs for more than 9,000 refugees and served nearly a quarter of a million meals.   She also begged Americans at home to help finance her efforts.  'For heaven's sake,' she wrote to a friend, 'proclaim everywhere  and as publicly as possible what it will mean to all that we Americans cherish in England and France go under.' In June, Wharton arrived in Dunkirk immediately after the town had been shelled   by the Germans.  'The freshness of the havoc seemed to accentuate its cruelty,' she wrote.   The hospitals in Dunkirk were struggling to absorb  the casualties from artillery but they were also confronting the effects of a shocking new weapon that had just been introduced [gas warfare].

So, after the USA spent blood and treasure defending French borders in both World War I and World War II, the French now try to guilt trip the USA into completely surrendering our national sovereignty by adopting open borders.

The French mooched food from the United States during World War I, and instead of either paying the USA back, or even paying our charity forward to other countries in need, the only thing the snotty cheapskate loan defaulting French know how to do is try to guilt trip the USA into spending even more of our own money on other random ungrateful foreigners:

Through these extensive undertakings, 3 billion dollars were spent delivering 11 million metric tons of supplies to the countries in need. The United States funded most of the money, though some others, like Britain, did help out a bit. Belgium and France tried to cover the cost of the food relief efforts by taking out loans. However, during the Great Depression, the loans were deserted.

It seems the rumor that Obama would be fundraising in France on the Fourth of July was greatly exaggerated. If the rumor had been true, I would have posted this video of French people singing the US national anthem from No Pasaran! :

I then would have pointed out that the French people weren't singing to honor Obama, specifically, nor the 4th of July, but some weird leftie thing called pangea day. I then would have paraphrased a snarky comment from Pirate's Cove that people opposed to leftie pangea day are evil right wing extremists who will be placed immediately on the DHS terrorism watch list. But I can't do any of that, so I'll post a link to the first Catholic bishop in the US's 1791 Prayer for Goverment to wrap of Fortnight for Freedom festivities, instead:

Moderate Taleban = Oxymoron

The French believe that NATO should accept a moderate Taleban take over of the Afghan government:

In an interview published in the French newspaper Le Figaro on Monday, the French foreign minister, Bernard Koucher, took the idea further, saying the West should accept a pro-Taliban leadership if Afghans choose such an administration in elections set for next August.

Most conservatives are skeptical that there are such things as a moderate Taliban.

Varadarajan volunteers the somewhat disconcerting fact that the Taliban has offices in Queens, NY.

Perhaps they still occupy the office they held during the Clinton administration when they were lobbying the UN:

The Taliban has been unpopular with women's groups, human rights organizations and many governments and international organizations for its efforts to impose its puritan vision of society on Afghans, and it has been reviled even by the Iranians for giving Islam an out-of-date image, if not a bad name. It has not been able to budge either the General Assembly credentials committee, which decides who holds U.N. seats, or the powerful governments behind it, most of all the United States.

don't see what peace talks that happened in 1938 have to do with anything going on now, really. Surely if something can be solved peacefully, then that is the best route to go down? There were a number of issues surrounding the Munich agreement, you seem to take a worringly simplistic view of it.

Saint Pierre de Varengeville-Duclair was liberated by the Canadians on 30 August 1944, and the town has established a permanent marker in their honor:



so the citizens of the town may not have felt specifically obligated to the American troops who were only posted at their town's outskirts awaiting transport back to the US.

Additionally, while the average of European beech tree lifespan is listed as 900 years by Encyclopedia Britannica, it is more commonly listed as 100-125 years by most other online guides. Hence, rather than blaming French perfidy, the trees were reaching the end of their expected lifespans and would have eventually died due to natural causes.
