Saints Who Went to the Margins
"Clear & transparent as light & just as simple." So a biographer described Pauline von Mallinckrodt. She was born in Germany in A.D. 1817, to a Lutheran father & a devout Catholic mother. Love & respect governed their home, altho there was also suffering caused by the religious differences.

Pauline learned to practice works of mercy early on, as she accompanied her mother on visits to the poor & sick . Pauline's teacher Luise Hensel , an accomplished port, instilled in her pupils a deep love for their faith Many of her students entered religious life, & several, including Pauline, became foundresses of religious communities. Under her teacher's guidance, Pauline developed a character firmly ordered to charity & kindness.

Pauline joined societies that provided in-home care, including a group that stayed up at night to watch at the bedside of the sick. She headed a preschool childcare center & established an institute to care for blind children. Advised by a bishop to found her own community, she established the Congregation of the Sisters of Christian Charity, the Daughters of the Immaculate Heart.
"Love for children is the best teacher of pedagogy...that attracts them...& draws down God's blessing upon them & us."
Eternal Father, through the intercession of Blessed Pauline , fill us with your tender love for all children, especially the most needy
