Saints Who Heard a Call Late in Life
At the age of 8, John left his home in Portugal for an unknown reason with a priest who brought him to Spain , where he worked as a shepherd 
. After 2 stints in the army, he returned to his childhood home only to learn that his mother was dead & his father had joined the Franciscans

John decided at that moment to serve God with his life 
although the was was not yet clear. He took work as a shepherd 
a servant, & then a traveling peddler of religious books 
In his early forties, John came to Granada, where a sermon by Saint John of Avila convinced him of his wretchedness.

to serve the sick poor & the mentally ill 
. With John of Avila 's encouragement, he left the asylum & began to learn nursing skills. He somehow found the means to finance a house in the city, where he served the sick as his own brothers, offering them diligent care, clean conditions, & daily prayer 
Eternal Father, through the intercession of Saint John of God, come to me in moments of anxiety and depression. Let me see your face.
