the so-called "trivium" (grammar, logic, & rhetoric) & "quadrivium" (arithmetic , astronomy , music , & geometry )-as well as theology . He held the post of rector at the school for 2 decades, & narrowly escaped the illustrious position of Archbishop of Reims ♝ Around the age of 50, he retreated with a few companions to the frigid & remote valley of Chartreuse There they lived as hermits, though joining each other at times for communal prayer

Through solitude & silence they detached themselves from the goods of the world in order to be free to contemplate the goodness of God Called to Rome by Pope Urban II a former student, to serve as his counselor Bruno was finally permitted to return to his beloved monastic life on condition that he stay near to the pope in case he needed him. Bruno died at the monastery of Santa Maria della Torre in Calabria on 6 October, 1101 A.D.

Although Carthusians do not seek canonization-"Be a saint, rather than be called one"-he was added to the general Roman calendar by Pope Clement X in 1674 A.D. He is often depicted with the motto "O Bonitas" - "O Goodness."
