Born in Maastricht in the Netherlands , Lambert grew up in a predominantly pagan area. Despite or perhaps because of this, his parents saw to it that he had a serious religious formation

by his uncle, the saintly bishop Theodard . Prudent

, athletic 
, and fond of reading 
he became a priest, eventually succeeding Theodard as bishop ♗ 5 years into his episcopacy, he became embroiled in political turmoil & was forced out of his diocese . For 7 years he lived as a simple member of a monastic community.#Catholic

During this time, it is said, Lambert obeyed the abbot as carefully as any novice would. When Pepin of Herstal (great-grandfather of Charlemagne ) came to power, he recalled Bishop Lambert, who returned to his duties with zeal, including going personally to convert the pagans who remained in his diocese. Then Pepin began an affair 
& Lambert came to the court "like another John the Baptist."
(In addition, some of Lambert's relatives had incurred anger from the court.) A group of soldiers broker into Lambert's home, killing him & his companions. Several miracles occurred around his relics, & he was swiftly honored as a martyr for marital fidelity
