One of the martyrs who died in the persecutions of Diocletian , Genesius lived around the turn of the 3rd century. A history of his life was written much later 
but there is evidence of devotion to him just decades after his death.

It is said Genesius was a member of an acting troupe 
& apparently a very good one. In the early days of the Church, the rites of Christian initiation were kept secret 
& carefully guarded. Genesius infiltrated 
the Christian community, posing as a catechumen 
in order to gain material for a play parodying their faith, devised to curry favor with Diocletian on his imperial visit to Rome

In the play, Genesius pretended to be a sick man 
calling out for baptism. The performance was a huge success, until suddenly Genesius found he was not just pretending anymore. Not only did he begin to sincerely profess the faith, he called upon the emperor to believe as well. The play was stopped 
& Genesius was arrested with his fellow actors 
who were released after confirming their "innocence."

But Genesius , despite bitter torture, continued firm & gave his life, a martyr-catechumen . He is the patron saint of clowns 
& actors
