๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ฆ Saint Genesius Feast: 25 August

Saints Who Display Gifts of the Holy Spirit ๐Ÿ•Š️

One of the martyrs who died in the persecutions of Diocletian , Genesius lived around the turn of the 3rd century. A history of his life was written much later ๐Ÿ“œ ๐Ÿชถ but there is evidence of devotion to him just decades after his death.

It is said Genesius was a member of an acting troupe ๐ŸŽญ & apparently a very good one. In the early days of the Church, the rites of Christian initiation were kept secret ๐Ÿคซ & carefully guarded. Genesius infiltrated ๐Ÿ•ต️‍♂️ the Christian community, posing as a catechumen ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐ŸŽ“ in order to gain material for a play parodying their faith, devised to curry favor with Diocletian on his imperial visit to Rome ๐ŸŸ️

In the play, Genesius pretended to be a sick man ๐Ÿค’ calling out for baptism. The performance was a huge success, until suddenly Genesius found he was not just pretending anymore. Not only did he begin to sincerely profess the faith, he called upon the emperor to believe as well. The play was stopped ๐Ÿ›‘ & Genesius was arrested with his fellow actors ⛓️ who were released after confirming their "innocence."

But Genesius , despite bitter torture, continued firm & gave his life, a martyr-catechumen . He is the patron saint of clowns ๐Ÿคก & actors ๐ŸŽญ

๐Ÿ™ O Holy Spirit ๐Ÿ•Š️ help us to rise above our selfish pursuits & yearn for the eternal life embodied in the mysteries of the faith ๐Ÿ›
