Pope and martyr ( ✝️ 222 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 14 October
Callistus, also known as Callixtus, was a young Christian slave who was put in charge of some money ð° given to his master. Callistus lost the money, which was a fund for the support of widows and orphans, and fled from Rome ð♂️ ðĻ ð️ in consequence. He even jumped overboard from a ship to avoid capture ð♂️ ⛵ , but to no avail. He was caught, and returned to Rome, and sentenced ⚖️ to work on a mill.

His creditors, however, requested his release, hoping that Callistus might be able to regain their lost money. Callistus apparently tried to get some money from local Jews . Whether he was trying to borrow or collect on debt is uncertain, but he was arrested for fighting in a synagogue
and sent to do hard labor in the salt mines
. When Christian workers were liberated, Callistus returned to Rome again.
He seems to have been a man of great administrative abilities ð ✍️ , for he was given charge of a Christian burial ground ðŠĶ - still known today as the cemetery of Saint Callistus - and became a deacon, papal advisor, and finally pope ♗. His five-year papacy was marked by gentleness, and he is thought to have died a martyr's death in 222.
