Saints Who Served in Times of Plague and Pandemic 🦠

An ethnic Pole, Jan was born in Beyzymy Wielkie (modern Ukraine). After studies in Kiev, he joined the Jesuits and was ordained in Krakow in 1881. Assigned to Tarnopol and Chyrow, he taught languages πŸ‘¨‍🏫 πŸ’± to students and served in the infirmary πŸ‘¨‍⚕️ . For many years, he harbored a desire to go among lepers. In 1898, at the age of forty-eight, he was given leave to go to the lepers on the island of Madagascar 🏝️ .

Jan was sent to the remote spot outside the capital where 150 lepers had been crowded into huts without windows, floors, or furniture πŸ€• 🏚️ . Food was scarce, and many were dying of hunger. Jan moved in among them and began to tend them ⚕️ πŸ‘¨‍⚕️ . He begged for money and bought them food 🍞 . #Catholic https://moremaiorum.pl/ojciec-jan-beyzym-budowniczy-szpitala-na-madagaskarze/

As Jan explained to his provincial, "One must be in constant union with God and pray πŸ™ without respite. One must get used little by little to the stench, for here we don't breathe the scent of flowers but the putrefaction of bodies generated by leprosy." Jan asked his Polish friends to send seeds for fragrant flowers πŸ’ . And in 1911, foreign monetary donations πŸ’° enabled him to build a hospital πŸ₯ to receive the lepers. Jan died of illness the following year.

Saint John Paul II lauded Jan, saying that he had given "the greatest gift of mercy: bringing people to Christ and giving them the opportunity to know and enjoy his love πŸ’— ."
