🇹🇳 🇩🇿 🇻🇦 Saint Donatian of Africa
Bishop and martyr ( ✝️ 484 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 6 September
Saints Who Faced Persecution
The Gospel spread to the northern coast of Africa in the earliest days of the Church ⛪ . By the time the Roman Empire's persecution of the Church had ended, Catholic communities were established all over North Africa. But the Arian heresy also began to spread among Christians. In the 5th Century, Vandal tribes won control of North Africa, and the Vandals were Arians.

In the year 484, the Vandal King Huneric made it clear that he intended to eradicate the Catholic faith. First, he ordered Catholic churches to be closed 🔒 ⛪ and confiscated the goods of the clergy, giving them to Arian clergy. Then Huneric commanded Donatian and five other Catholic bishops ♗ of the region to come to his capital in Carthage. When the bishops arrived, they complained to him about his unjust treatment of Catholics. Huneric had Donatian and four other bishops beaten 🤕 💪 , expelled from the city, and forced into the desert 👉 🌵 . A fifth bishop was imprisoned ⛓️ for years and later unalived. But Donatian died a martyr in exile for his faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Huneric surely thought that by executing Donatian and other Catholic bishops, he would help kill off Catholic faith and practice. Instead, of course, the Church survived, and Catholics have honored Donatian and his companions as martyrs ever since.
🙏 Jesus, our Good Shepherd, bless the shepherds of your flock with courage and wisdom 🛐
