Religious ( ✝️ 1054 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 25 September
Saints Who Encourage Us to Pray ๐
Herman was born with a cleft palate, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy. His physical limitations, however, were not able to mask his genius. When he was seven years old, his parents entrusted him to the care of a learned abbot for his education ⛪ ๐จ๐ซ . Herman spent the rest of his life at the abbey of Reichenau, in southern Germany. He seems to have been blessed with the photographic memory that sometimes accompanies cerebral palsy, as well as the determination and humility that characterize so many who carry the burden of disability ๐ฉผ .

Confined to a carrying chair ๐จ๐ฆฝ and dependent on others for movement, Herman also had difficulty speaking ๐ฃ️ and writing ✍️ . Yet he became a popular teacher, drawing many students from all over ๐จ๐ . Adept not only in theology but also in mathematics ๐งฎ , music ๐ผ ๐ถ , language ๐ฑ , and history, it is said that his good cheer ๐ and humility ๐ made everyone love him ๐ .
Herman was also an artist who wrote theological verse and beautiful music ๐ต . The Blessed Mother was ever his beloved patron. She helped him to bear his physical sufferings, and brought him spiritual peace ๐️ . In her honor, Herman is thought to have written the "Salve Regina" and the beautiful Marian antiphon for Advent, "Alma Redemptoris Mater".
