"One thing you can be sure of: that while you work for God, whether you succeed or not, he will amply reward you." Edmund Rice was born in Ireland in A.D. 1762. A man of integrity & intelligence, he joined his uncle's shipping business ⛵ of which he later became the head. In his twenties, he married Mary Elliot 👰‍♀️ 🤵 💒

But within a few years Edmund 's wife died 🪦 shortly after giving birth to a little girl. Little Mary, described as "delicate" & "weak-headed," suffered from some kind of disability. Rice could reasonably have been expected to entrust her to the care of other family members, but he chose to raise his daughter himself. He relocated his home to be nearer to work, & obtained the help of his half-sister as housekeeper. When his daughter was grown...

Rice considered joining a religious community in continental Europe 🇪🇺 But a friend challenged him to work for the poor boys in his home region. This had long been his passion. (For example, it is told how he bought the freedom of a young slave ⛓️ , arranged for his baptism & education, & helped him start a small business.) Rice founded both the Presentation Brothers & the ( Irish ) Christian Brothers. After many years of service, Rice died in A.D. 1844.

Rice was beatified in A.D. 1996 by Saint John Paul II.
