In Guatemala , Pedro joined the seminary 🏫 ⛪ but left when it became apparent that the studies were too difficult for him. He became a Franciscan tertiary, taking the name Pedro de San José . For the next 12 years he labored diligently among the poor in Guatemala . With a special devotion to the Nativity, he strove to find the face of the infant Jesus in those whom he served.

Hermano Pedro , as he was known, cared for the sick, prisoners, & the homeless, & used a little hut he was given to establish a hospital dedicated to Our Lady of Bethlehem (whose Immaculate Conception he defended, well before its definition as a dogma). 👨‍⚕️ 🏥
