🇹🇷 🇮🇱 🇻🇦 Saint George 🐉 Feast: 23 April

🇹🇷 🇮🇱 🇻🇦 Saint George
Martyr (✝️ ca 303 Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 23 April

St. George was a Roman tribune 🇮🇹 in Cappadocia , serving the emperor Diocletian . When a decree condemned any Christian serving in the army, George surrendered himself and professed his faith in Christ :jesus:. The emperor tried to induce him to renounce his faith with offers of land & wealth 💰 but when George refused he was sentenced to death.

After many terrible tortures, George was beheaded 🪓 . Quite apart from the historical record, St. George became much better known for his part in a more fanciful adventure. According to this story, as recounted in the medieval "Golden Legend", a town was afflicted by a gruesome dragon 🔥 🐉 whose terrible breath alone could kill.

To appease the dragon, the townspeople would deliver sheep 🐑 🐲. When the supply of sheep was exhausted, however, they took to delivering young men & women, chosen by lot. Eventually, the king's own daughter was selected for sacrifice ♔ 👸

When the desolate king prayed 🙏 for a champion, a passing knight, St. George appeared. Learning the details of the situation, he bid the princess throw her girdle around the dragon's neck, whereupon, subdued, the beast followed them back to town as meekly as a dog on a leash. Though the townspeople were terrified by this sight, George assured them that if only they believed in Jesus Christ :jesus:  & accepted baptism he would slay the dragon.
