Saints Who Were Devoted to Saint Joseph
Leonard Murialdo was born in Turin , Italy . He lost his father when he was a child, & a few years later, he was sent to a prestigious Catholic boarding school Though he did well at his studies, he chose bad companions. Around the age of 14, his exemplary life began to crumble.
Leonard would write, "What a deep abyss I collapsed into, & in so short a time." Fearful for his soul, he left school. His concerned mother sent him to make a general confession, which became a turning point in his life. He continued his studies, but made a point to choose classes without bad companions. He went to become a diocesan priest & worked closely with Saint John Bosco .
In his concern to help the working class, Father Leonard found in Saint Joseph the Worker a special patron. By his late thirties, he was in charge of a boarding school where young men received both academic & professional training He helped organize a union of Catholic workers, & finally he established the Congregation of Saint Joseph, whose members provided support for apprentices & trade workers.
Father Leonard also founded the Association of the Good Press & a newspaper "The Voice of the Worker". He died after decades of labor on behalf of workers. It is said that his final words were, "I'm waiting."
