It is believed that Margaret, or Marina , was martyred under the Emperor Diocletian . She was venerated 1st in the East, & devotion to her spread to Europe in the Middle Ages. in the 9th Century, Saint Rabanus included Margaret's story in his martyrology

According to this account, the Roman Consul Olybrius 1st spied Margaret, a beautiful Christian maiden, tending her sheep 
in Antioch . When Margaret refused his offer of marriage 
insisting that she had pledged herself to Christ 
, Olybrius retaliated by having her imprisoned & tortured 
She was thrown into a prison cell, where she did battle with a demonic visitor 
who took the form 1st of a dragon 
& then of a menacing man

Afterward, Margaret was brought out & beheaded 🪓 An incident in which the dragon swallows Margaret but is forced to spit her out, irritated as he is by the cross she carries in her hands 
has long been viewed as spurious. All the same, this story of miraculous delivery from death inspired women to call on Margaret while in labor 
She also intercedes for those with kidney disease.
