Kateri was adopted by her aunt, whose husband, a prominent leader of the Mohawks , was fiercely opposed to Christianity as the religion of the French enemies Years later, a treaty brought French Jesuit missionaries to her home, & at 18 Kateri began to take instruction & was baptized Kateri ( Mohawk for Catherine ). She was ostracized & abused for her faith-refused food on Sunday because she did not work, & cruelly attacked by members of her own tribe

Eventually, fearing for her life, Kateri 's confessor advised her to flee to a Christian settlement. Life in a Catholic community brought tremendous happiness & new crosses. She made her First Holy Communion , but her desire to begin a religious community was denied by ecclesial authorities as imprudent. Yet she remained committed to virginity.
