John Cassian was born around the year 360 A.D. in what is now Romania . Around the age of 20, he traveled to Palestine & became a monk in Bethlehem . During the next 2 decades he lived the life of a hermit & also visited many of the Desert Fathers

John Cassian recorded the Desert Fathers 's wisdom in his work "Conferences on the Egyptian Monk"
He then journeyed to Constantinople
where he became a disciple of Saint John Chrysostom , who ordained him a deacon. When Chrysostom was falsely accused by his enemies, Cassian traveled to Rome
to defend him. He was ordained a priest in France
where he went on to establish monasteries

In addition to the "Conferences," Cassian wrote "Institutes of the Monastic Life." Both works were tremendously influential on monastic life, inspiring Saint Benedict as he wrote his famous rule. With great insight into spiritual combat, virtue, & vice, he is considered one of the 1st authors to offer a guide to spiritual direction. "Certainly the same kind of prayers

prays another." John died in 433 A.D. & was buried in Marseille , France đĒĻ where he is specially venerated.
