After serving in Oklahoma parishes, Stanley answered a call for missionaries in 1968. He drove 2,000 miles
to his new assignment in Guatemala
, where he served among the Tz'utujil natives, living poorly among the poor. Here, languages gave him no trouble. He mastered Spanish
and Tz' utujil , even going so far as to partially translate the New Testament into the native tongue.

He used his farming know-how to help them in their struggles to grow food on their land, creating an irrigation system & introducing new crops. He even brought in tractors π which he fixed himself π§°π§ π¨π§ All the while, a civil war was raging. Death squads carried out regular murders, especially of the poor. When Stanley 's name appeared on a death list ☠️ π he was called back to Oklahoma , but remained there only a short time.

"A shepherd cannot run from his flock," he told his brother.
3 months after his return to Guatemala , in the early morning of July 28, 1981 A.D. 3 men broke into Stanley 's rectory & shot him dead. He was beatified in 2016 as the United States 's first native-born martyr.
