In a spoof of the World War I canard that the British military was comprised of lions led by donkeys - C.S. Lewis describes a donkey led by an ape in "The Last Battle" This metaphor seems to describe how the US military has been mismanaged at least since WWII with chickenhawks like Lindsey Graham leading the way:
Puzzle / Donkey: “Wouldn’t it be better if you went in because it’s you that wants to know what it is & I don’t much…”
Shift / Ape : “Really, Puzzle … I didn’t think you’d say a thing like that. I didn’t think it of you….but I’ll go in. I shall probably die then you’ll be sorry!”
