What is the Austrian National Anthem?
The Austrian national anthem, or Bundeshymne, is called "Land der Berge, Land am Strome" which translates from German to "Land of the Mountains, Land on the River." The anthem praises the country's natural beauty and its courage. Some of the anthem's lyrics alludes to the country's history during the Nazi regime, when Austria was annexed to Germany: "Strongly fought for, fiercely contested, You lie at the continent's center like a strong heart. You have borne since ancient times. The burden of a high mission, much tested Austria, much tested Austria."
Who Wrote the National Anthem?
The composer of the melody for "Land der Berge, Land am Strome" is not certain. However, the origin dates back to 1791 when it was created for the freemason lodge where Mozart and Johann Holzer were both members. There is a current theory that either of these men composed the melody. The lyrics to the anthem were written by Paula von Preradovic (1887-1951), who won a national competition to replace the former Austrian anthem.
