Saints Who Exemplify the Virtues
Frédéric Ozanam came from a devout, middle-class family. In his teens he experienced a crisis of faith 😩. The kindly Father Noirot talked him through it. Frédéric later said, "touched by so a rare a goodness, I promised God to devote my life to the services of the truth which had given me peace." 🕊️

Frédéric went to study law ⚖️ in Paris, where he revived a group that brought together Catholics, agnostics, and atheists for impassioned debate. One day, Frédéric offered an argument for the truth of the Catholic faith. An atheist friend challenged him: "Let us be frank, Mr. Ozanam; let us also be very particular. What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?" Soon afterward, Frédéric and some friends began to visit the poor of the Paris tenements. This grew into the "conference of charity," the beginning of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.

In 1841, Frédéric married Amélie Soulacroix, who bore him a daughter, Marie. He pursued his law practice while completing a doctorate in literature 👨🎓 📚 .Soon afterward, the Sorbonne offered him a coveted post. Even as Frédéric taught his students 👨🏫 , wrote widely in his field 📝 , and devotedly supported his wife and daughter 👨👩👧 , he continued his work among the poor. His health finally gave way, and he died in Marseilles at the age of forty. Today, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society serves worldwide 🗺️.
