🇮🇱 đŸ‡ģđŸ‡Ļ Saints Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus Feast: 31 August

🇮🇱 đŸ‡ģđŸ‡Ļ Saints Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus
Disciples ( First Century Anno Domini A.D.) Feast: 31 August

These two saints, both perhaps members of the Sanhedrin, the supreme Jewish council ✡️ , make significant appearances in the Gospels. Joseph from the town of Arimathea is described as a "good and just man" who, though apparently wealthy 💰 , came to follow Jesus. After the crucifixion ✝️ he requested permission from Pilate to retrieve Jesus' body. With the help of Nicodemus, he wrapped the body in fine linen and had it placed in his own unused family tomb đŸĒĻ

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and "a ruler of the Jews." In the Gospel of John he comes to Jesus secretly đŸ¤Ģ by night 🌛  and engages him in theological discussion. "Rabbi," he addresses Jesus respectfully, "we know that you are a teacher 👨‍đŸĢ  come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him." This prompts the reply from Jesus, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew he cannot see the kingdom of God." Later, John says that Nicodemus spoke on Jesus's behalf before the council, insisting that he receive a fair hearing. This incites a mocking response: "Are you from Galilee too?"

Scripture provides no more information about these two disciples, though Joseph is the subject of later florid legends involving the Holy Grail 🍷 and his supposed travels to Glastonbury in England đŸ´ķ §ķ ĸķ Ĩķ Žķ §ķ ŋ 🏝️ đŸšŖ‍♂️

"Nicodemus said to him, 'How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?' Jesus answered, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit 🕊️ , he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.'"  - John 3:4-5
